Below is a complete list of RAPs for Fall 2009. Check out the individual program pages for detailed information on each RAP.

Orchard Hill

Honors level introductory biology class.  TAP Seminar taught by faculty. Includes upper class RAP Mentors in the residence hall.  Must room with other students in BioTAP.

Careers in Education RAP

 

Southwest

Seminar taught by faculty from the School of Education for students who want to learn about options in education; minors, certificates, etc.  Small section of "Introductory Psychology" (Psych 100) in residential area.

Careers in Law RAP

 

 

Southwest

Small section of "Constitutional Law" (Poli Sci 162) in residential area.  Students work with the Pre-Law Advisor during the fall semester.  "Careers in Law" class available for spring semester.

Careers in Public Health RAP

 

 

Southwest

Small section of "Race, Gender, Class & Ethnicity" (Soc 106) in residential area that explores personal, community, and global health-related issues. Seats in "My Body My Health" (Public Health 160) on main campus with RAP discussion section in residential area. RAP Seminar taught by faculty and staff from the School of Public Health.

Commonwealth College Honors RAPs

For students admitted into Commonwealth College

 

Central & Orchard Hill

Various Honors RAPs available for all majors and undeclared. Includes one or two honors classes. Must be roommates with other students in your Honors RAP. Refer to Commonwealth College section for more information.

Communications Majors RAP

Southwest

RAP Seminar. Small section of "Intro to Interpersonal Communication" (Comm 118) in residential area during Fall semester. Small section of "Intro to Media and Culture" (Comm 121) in residential area during Spring semester.

Computer Science Majors RAP

Orchard Hill

RAP Seminar taught by faculty. Room with students in the program. College Writing 112  in the residential area during the Fall semester.

Connecting Arts & Society RAPs

 

Central & Southwest

For students interested in visual arts, performance arts, history and culture. Students enroll in a "pair" of classes. All students enroll in "The Lively Arts" (Music 150) and either a History class (History 100 in SW or History 111 in Central) OR Cultural Anthropology (Anthro 104). Learn about various forms of visual and performance art - meet artists. Explore the multitude of connections between arts and society.

Emerging Scholars RAP

Southwest

Two honors classes. RAP Seminar. Collaboration between Commonwealth College and Undergraduate Advising for ALANA students who were nearly admitted to ComCol. Live with students in the program.

Engineering Majors RAPs

Declared Majors ONLY

 

Northeast & Orchard Hill

Special sections of College Writing 112 in the residential area. Main campus seats in "Calculus 1" Math 131. Room with students in the program. Upper class RAP Mentors live in the residence hall with EnginRAP students.

English TAP

By Invitation Only

 

Central

Enrollment in "Literary Studies Seminar" (English 200). Get to know faculty in the department. Room with students in the program.

Foundations RAPs

One or two small Gen Ed classes in residential area. Seats in College Writing 112 available in Fall and Spring semesters.  Available in 6 locations  - see RAP website program page for details. OASIS seminar available for Undeclared students.

Focus Connections RAP

Undeclared Students ONLY

 

 

Central & Southwest

Learn how to match strengths, interests and goals with the various majors at UMass Amherst. Includes: OASIS First-Year Seminar, small section of a Gen Ed class in the residential area (Anthropology, Sociology or Psychology - see RAP website program page for details), and College Writing 112 in the residential area in Fall semester.

Focus Enterprise RAP

Undeclared Students ONLY

 

Northeast & Southwest

Focus on business related major or career. Includes: OASIS First-Year Seminar, introductory classes in Economics or Resource Economics, seats in Math classes on main campus, and College Writing 112 in the residential area in Fall semester.

Global
Opportunities RAP

 

 

Northeast

RAP Seminar taught by faculty and staff from across campus for students interested in culture, world languages, study abroad opportunities, and international events. Small section of "Culture, Society & People" (Anthro 104) in residential area. Room with other students in Global Opportunities RAP in Thatcher Language House. Students are invited to participate in various cultural activities sponsored by the upper class students who live in Thatcher Language House.  No language proficiency requirement.

Health Sciences RAP

 

 

Southwest

Small section of "Medical Ethics" (Phil 164) in residential area. Main campus seats and  RAP lab sections for  "Intro to Biology" (Bio 100) OR "General Chemistry" (Chem 111) for students in specific majors.

Investigating
Democracy  RAP

 

Southwest

Small section of "Introduction to Political Theory" (PoliSci 171) in the residential area.

Isenberg Fellows

ISOM students ONLY, Application Required

 

Southwest

Choice of Diversity in Business OR International Fellows. Includes economics or resource economics class and College Writing 112. Live with students in the program.

Literary Studies RAP

 

Central

Small section of "International Short Story" (Comp Lit 121) in residential area - Special section with film viewing component. View films and have discussion time with students in Reflections Honors RAP.

Nursing Majors RAPs

 

Orchard Hill & Southwest

RAP Seminar Nursing 150 - "Faculty Seminar for First-Year Nursing Students." Room with students in the program. Special sections of College Writing 112 in the residential area.

Partners in Education (PiE) Ernst & Young

By Invitation ONLY


Southwest

Collaboration between ISOM and Ernst & Young. Designed to promote diversity, students may be undeclared or in any major outside of ISOM. Includes  RAP Seminar and Intro to Economics class (lecture on main campus with discussion section in residential area),  seats in Math 104 on main campus and College Writing class in the residential area during fall semester. Certain spring classes also included.

Performing & Visual Arts Majors RAP

Declared Majors ONLY

 

Central

For Art, Dance,  Music, Theater and Art History majors. Students choose from "Introductory Psychology" (Psych 100) OR "Human Biology (Bio 106) seats reserved in main campus sections. Special sections of College Writing 112 in the residential area. Room with students in the program.

Small section of "American Politics" (Poli Sci 101) in residential area.

Psychology Majors

RAP Seminar  taught by faculty. "Introductory Psychology" (Psych 100) small class taught by faculty in the residential area. Room with students in the program. Special entrance to advanced courses in Psychology for spring semester.

Scientific
Connections RAP

 

Northeast

For students declared OR interested in Chemistry, Geology and Physics majors. Restricted to these majors until the first day of NSO. RAP Seminar taught by faculty from these majors. Small section of "Intro to Ethics" (Phil 160) with twist to scientific research, in residential area. Seats in Math 131 on main campus. Spring seminar available for research and projects.

Social Justice & Activism RAP 

 

Southwest

RAP Seminar. Choose from "The Civil Rights Movement" (Afro Am 236) OR "Labor & the Global Economy" (Labor 190A*) OR  "Intro to Women's Studies" (Women Stud 187*) on main campus (* with RAP discussion section in residential area). Spring opportunities for seminar and seats in popular lecture classes.

Sociology Majors RAP

Declared Majors ONLY

 

 

Southwest

RAP Seminar taught by faculty and staff. "Introduction to Sociology" (Soc 110) small class taught by faculty in the residential area. Will open to non-majors if space is available.

Sustainability RAP

 

Northeast

RAP Seminar taught by faculty from numerous departments for students who want to explore ways to incorporate environmental interests with academic studies and/or lifestyle choices. Choice of "Intro to Ethics" (Phil 160) OR "Introduction to Resource Economics" (Res Econ 102 - micro) small class in residential area. Main campus seats in "Introductory Environmental Biology" (Env Sci 101) OR "The Built Environment" (BMATWT 191A) OR "Society & Environment" (NRC100. Spring opportunities including seats in popular lecture classes and RAP seminar for research and projects.
